What are the factors critical to a child's readiness for school?
According to the National School Readiness Study, there are five important factors that influence school readiness. These include motor skills, cognition and general knowledge, language and literacy, social-emotional interactions, and approach to learning. A review of a few research studies showed that children with ASD are less school ready emotionally than their peers and those children with ASD appear to have more externalising behaviours and self-regulation difficulties that affect their school engagement and their relationships with their teachers. Students who enter kindergarten without school readiness skills are more likely to demonstrate academic, behavioural, and social struggles during school. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are particularly at risk for underdeveloped school readiness skills, which can undermine academic achievement and result in poor long-term outcomes. Therefore it's very important to help children improve preparation for school and, therefore, later academic and long-term life outcomes for those students with ASD and related disorders. One of the upcoming group online training for parents and professionals this summer is called 'How to Teach School Readiness Skills to Learners with ASD and related conditions.'' The training will enable every parent/guardian or a professional to access sequential order of activities to do with a child and selected evidence-based methods. It includes lesson plans with a heavy emphasis how to troubleshoot when things sometimes do not go to plan and how to use error correction procedures. This highly recommended online training can be booked here.
